Toy manufacturers are ditching gendered toy marketing. Major toy companies such as Lego, Target, Mattel and Ditto already abolished gendered toys, opting instead for gender neutral toys.

The Top 4 Countries with Gender Neutral Toys are USA, UK, Australia and Canada

Google Trends reveals that the countries that have the highest percentages of gender neutral toys in the world are: USA, UK, Australia and Canada.

The success of the journey of adopting gender-neutral toys in the UK can be attributed to the famous Let Toys Be Toys campaign.

The campaign was aimed at getting toy industries to stop limiting children’s interests by promoting some toys as suitable for only one gender – either boy or girl.

As for Canada, it was one of the few countries where Mattel’s first gender-neutral dolls were sold.

It was also in Canada that the nesting doll Sam was introduced for transgender children.

California has the Highest Prevalence of Gender-Neutral Toys in the US

Well, if you’re looking to see how a gender-neutral toys world looks like, head to California.

As shown in the screenshot below, California is the State with the highest prevalence of gender-neutral toys in the US. Illinois and Arizona follow closely.

In fact, California is the first state to require large departmental stores that stock toys to do so in gender-neutral ways.

Although the stores can still maintain gender-specific aisles, they are required to have gender-neutral aisles too.

Each doll looks like a slender 7-year-old with short hair and no apparent gender connotation.

Younger Generation Parents are more likely to buy Gender Neutral Toys

Research suggests that younger generations have embraced the idea of gender-neutral toys than older generations.

This is probably because this generation is more open-minded than the previous generations.

12% and 15% of parents aged under 25 years and 25-44 years respectively have purchased gender-neutral toys for their children.

Parents from the same age groups who have not yet done so report that they would be interested in buying the toys.

Only 5% of parents aged above 65 years have purchased a non-gendered toy. Interestingly, this group is least interested in buying such toys.

This could be the case of “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. The older parents probably have the gendered toys so ingrained in their minds that it’s difficult to transition to non-gendered toys.

Gender-Neutral Toys are more popular among Parents of Children aged 0-5 years

Parents of children aged 0-5 years have the highest preference for non-gendered toys – 24%.

Most People buy Gender-Neutral Toys from Large Stores

According to a survey conducted among people buying gender-neutral toys, most buyers prefer to buy from big stores such as Amazon, Target and Walmart.
